POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012)

The POCSO Act, 2012 is a special law enacted in India to protect children (below 18 years) from sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and pornography. It ensures child-friendly procedures during investigation and trial, aiming to safeguard the best interests of the child.

The Act clearly defines offenses such as:

  • Penetrative and non-penetrative sexual assault
  • Sexual harassment
  • Using a child for pornographic purposes

POCSO mandates reporting of offenses and prescribes strict punishment for the accused, including life imprisonment in serious cases. It also provides for in-camera trials and protection of the child's identity.

The law plays a crucial role in creating a safer environment for children and holding offenders accountable under a structured legal process.
